Flexibility and power

I don’t expect we’ll make software that looks and feels like iOS apps (we shouldn’t), but I do expect we’ll learn from iOS apps how power is the real goal, and that flexibility is just a tool to use exceedingly sparingly, only when it substantially increases power.

Excellent article by Brent Simmons. I too am excited for the future of Mac software and how it is refocusing what the software does. (via Shawn Blanc)

Ethos

Patterns: Acknowledge existing ones, (and maybe ignore them), and identify new ones (and maybe embrace them).

Beautiful shots. Laurent Nivalle has done a great job capturing the spirit of these classic cars. His entire photo shoot is Big Picture worthy.

Automatic Syncing Using Dropbox

I think syncing over the air via Dropbox will be the answer to all mobile devices that need to share data with a computer. I hope all the GTD apps will follow in Agile’s steps. Kudos Agile! (via Mr. Blanc)

There’s no right answer

“And most important, expect the best answer to change.”

This entire post strikes me as how Apple does things. John Gruber has written about what Apple does with their products once they are released; but I think this is what Apple does before their products are released. They make prototypes, physically, to see how they work under actual situations. Nothing theoretical or etherial, no checklists, no fancy CGI with the average human hand modeled on a computer screen. Just a near finished product to test in real world scenarios. Then they make it better.

I hate you, you’re an idiot

Seth is so good at explaining how to give good feed back. If more businesses would practice this kind of analysis and feedback with new ideas those businesses would be a lot more successful.

Crave simplicity

Messers Porter and Brewer hit the nail on the head:

Our brains can handle complexity, but they crave simplicity.

And I think an unsourced quote from Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr. takes it full circle:

I would give my right arm for the simplicity on the far side of complexity.

Trimming the Fat

Trent Walton is a great designer. I love the fact that the iPhone/iPad is changing the way a “normal” website is designed. Why design two websites when you can design one. Simplicity.

Sweet Mac Setups Table of Contents

Shawn’s Sweet Mac Setups series are my favorite posts. Though his in depth software reviews are more of a favorite.

WOW! Cameron Moll can do more than design, that’s for sure. (via Sean Sperte)
